Bangladesh cricket legend Mahmudullah has announced that he will retire from T20 Internationals following the three-match series against India. After debuting in the format back in 2007 against Kenya, Mahmudullah has enjoyed a 17-year career in T20Is, making him one of the longest-serving players in the format, alongside Shakib Al Hasan and Zimbabwe’s Sean Williams.
Having retired from Test cricket in 2021, Mahmudullah has confirmed he will now focus solely on ODI cricket, where he continues to be a key player for Bangladesh. He was the top scorer for his side in the 2023 Men's World Cup, accumulating 328 runs in the tournament. His decision to step away from T20Is follows extensive discussions with his family, captain, coach, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Mahmudullah shared his thoughts on the decision, saying, “Yes, I’m retiring from T20Is after this series. It’s been a tough decision, but I believe now is the right time for me and the team to look ahead to future ODI commitments.”
Throughout his T20I career, Mahmudullah has made memorable contributions, including his standout performance in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, where he scored 43 off 18 balls to take Bangladesh to the final. However, the all-rounder also pointed to Bangladesh’s last-ball loss to India in the 2016 T20 World Cup as his most frustrating moment.
In 139 T20Is, Mahmudullah has accumulated 2,395 runs at a strike-rate of 117.74 and taken 40 wickets. With his retirement, Bangladesh will lose a reliable all-rounder, but Mahmudullah's legacy will continue as he remains a crucial part of their ODI setup.
